Short answer: On the AliExpress checkout screen, Additional charges is a separate line from shipping. In a US checkout checked by PMCODE on September 23, 2026, clicking the small question-mark icon showed that the entire $3.38 amount was Sales Tax. The popup said AliExpress was collecting and remitting that tax as a marketplace facilitator.
That result explains this particular checkout, but it should not be stretched into a rule for every order. The label is broad, and its breakdown can depend on the item, selected option, delivery address and current checkout calculation. The reliable method is to open the explanation beside the charge before paying.
PMCODE may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. Prices, discounts, availability, shipping and charges can change. No order was placed during these checks.

What does âAdditional chargesâ mean on AliExpress?
It is a summary label shown near the end of checkout. It appears below the shipping line and is included when AliExpress calculates the amount due. The label alone does not tell you what created the charge.
To see the available explanation, click the ? icon immediately after âAdditional charges.â In PMCODEâs September 23 check, the popup identified the full $3.38 as Sales Tax and explained that the marketplace facilitator was required by the relevant state sales-tax laws to collect it and remit it to the appropriate tax authorities.

This screenshot establishes the composition of that one charge. It does not prove that every amount displayed under the same heading is always sales tax. On earlier checks, we recorded the line but did not open the tooltip for each item, so the earlier amounts remain described using AliExpressâs own wording.
Why can Additional charges appear with free shipping?
Because shipping and sales tax are separate parts of the order. âFree shippingâ means that the checkout currently shows no delivery fee for the selected product, option and address. It does not mean that the purchase is exempt from tax or that the subtotal must equal the final amount charged.
AliExpressâs official Free Shipping terms say that the offer applies only to participating products and may require an order threshold. They also tell shoppers to check both the product page and the shipping fee displayed at checkout. That is consistent with what we observed: all five tested products showed free shipping, while each checkout still had a separate Additional charges line.
A practical way to read the summary is:
| Subtotal | â Saved | + Shipping fee | + Additional charges | = Checkout total |
What we found in five US checkout checks
On September 21, PMCODE took five different products to the final US confirmation screen. These were separate checkout checksânot one combined cart. All five selected variants accepted the delivery address and showed Free shipping. Additional charges appeared on every one.
| Product and selected option | Ship-from warehouse | Shipping | Additional charges | Final total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BLUETTI Elite 100 V2 Renew Grey, 110V, US plug, certified refurbished | United States | Free | $20.58 | $349.80 |
| NIIMBOT B1 label printer Dark Blue | China Mainland | Free | $1.68 | $28.56 |
| Baseus A5 Air car vacuum Black | China Mainland | Free | $3.28 | $55.77 |
| ANBERNIC RG34XXSP Grey, 64G | United States | Free | $4.30 | $73.09 |
| 70mai A810S Front camera only, no TF card | China Mainland | Free | $8.12 | $138.11 |
The complete experimentâincluding subtotals, automatic savings and delivery windowsâis available in our AliExpress US checkout test.
Why we do not automatically call every charge a tax or tariff
The new tooltip gives us direct evidence for one checkout: $3.38 of Additional charges equaled $3.38 of Sales Tax. That is stronger evidence than guessing from the amount or calculating a percentage.
But the five earlier checkout summaries showed only the top-level label. A charge that looks similar in size is not proof that it has the same composition. Calling all five amounts âsales tax,â âcustoms dutyâ or âtariffâ would go beyond what those screens visibly established.
This distinction also helps prevent two common mistakes:
- Do not treat the Saved line as a fee breakdown. It is AliExpressâs combined automatic-savings figure and may reflect more than one discount.
- Do not infer a duty from the ship-from country alone. The checkout display, selected warehouse, product option and delivery address should be checked together.
How to see the real amount before placing an order
- Set your delivery country and currency. Use the actual US destination and USD before comparing prices.
- Select the exact variant. Match color, bundle, storage, plug type and ship-from warehouse.
- Proceed to the final checkout screen. Buy now or use the cart, but stop before pressing Place order.
- Read every summary line. Record Subtotal, Saved, Shipping fee, Additional charges and Total separately.
- Click the question-mark icon. It appears directly after the Additional charges label when an explanation is available.
- Read the named components. Do not replace AliExpressâs wording with your own assumption.
If the popup is absent, does not load or still uses a general description, the honest conclusion is that the available checkout screen does not provide a more specific breakdown. Take a screenshot before ordering if the amount materially affects your decision.
Do US-warehouse products avoid Additional charges?
Not in our small sample. Both US-warehouse products displayed an Additional charges amount: $20.58 for the refurbished BLUETTI option and $4.30 for the ANBERNIC console. All three China Mainland options also displayed the line.
The warehouse did make a visible difference elsewhere. The two US-warehouse products showed earlier delivery windows than the three China-warehouse products in that test. That observation does not establish a universal delivery rule, and it does not show what composed each additional charge.
For shoppers, the useful lesson is simple: a domestic ship-from location may change delivery timing, but it is not a reason to skip the checkout breakdown.

Could you still be charged when the package arrives?
The Sales Tax popup answers only the amount AliExpress identified and collected in that checkout. It does not, by itself, promise that every possible customs, import or carrier charge is prepaid.
Before ordering, look for any wording about included import charges or duties on the product page and checkout screen. If the orderâs treatment is unclearâespecially for a high-value item or an international courier shipmentâdo not interpret the sales-tax popup as a blanket guarantee about later charges. The exact checkout screen and the shipping terms for the selected listing are more useful than a general forum answer.
Frequently asked questions
Are AliExpress Additional charges the same as shipping?
No. They are displayed on separate lines. In PMCODEâs check, shipping was Free while Additional charges were $3.38.
Were the $3.38 Additional charges a sales tax?
Yes, for the checkout shown in our September 23 screenshot. The popup labeled the full $3.38 as Sales Tax.
Are all AliExpress Additional charges sales tax?
We cannot establish that from one breakdown. Open the question-mark tooltip for the exact order and use the component names AliExpress displays.
Why does the amount change when I change my address?
The delivery destination is part of the checkout calculation. A different address can produce a different tax or shipping result, so set the final destination before comparing totals.
Does free shipping mean the final price equals the subtotal?
No. Free shipping makes the shipping line zero; discounts and Additional charges can still change the final total.
Do I have to place the order to see the charge?
No. You can normally reach the final confirmation screen, inspect the summary and stop before pressing Place order.
Methodology and limits
PMCODEâs five-item table uses separate US checkout observations recorded on September 21, 2026. The Sales Tax explanation comes from a separate checkout screenshot captured on September 23, 2026. No order was submitted. We report only what the visible screens established and keep the generic Additional charges label where no detailed tooltip was recorded.
Product variants, account discounts, address, seller, warehouse, shipping method and time can all affect the result. This article explains how to read the checkout; it is not tax or customs advice.
